In the creation of the glassware collection in collaboration with Solange Knowles, designer Jason McDonald approached each production with a deliberate and meaningful intention. It is important to recognize the thoughtfulness behind McDonald's process, particularly as he drew inspiration from the cherished glassware found in Black households.

Luther Vandross Homage

A visual presentation accompanied the celebration, featuring the late Luther Vandross delivering his iconic 1989 performance of "A House is Not a Home" at Wembley Stadium in England. The imagery chosen for this occasion held deep symbolism, as it resonated with the themes of Black domesticity and the significance of household objects.

On Saint Heron's Instagram account, a statement was shared regarding the selection of this particular song. It highlighted the profound impact of the lyrics, "a chair is not a house, and a house is not a home," which subtly introduced the concept of the home's subconsciousness, the space it occupies, and the role of household objects within the landscape of Black domesticity.

By connecting the lyrics to the concepts of home and the significance of objects, she invited viewers to contemplate the cultural and emotional dimensions of Black domestic life.

Importance of Glassware in Black Households: Homage to the Ancestors

Remember the china cabinets in your grandmother’s home? I do. Vintage glassware graced the china cabinet of my late grandmother, fondly known as "Mawmaw" Jacqueline Cherry. Those delicate pieces, along with her cherished collection of Black figurines, especially the Black angels, hold a special place in my memories.

The collection of her Black figurines, particularly the Black angels, showcased our spirituality, grace, and the diversity of our experiences.

It served as a visual reminder of our ancestors' resilience, their ability to find beauty and joy even in the face of adversity. It held the essence of family, community, and the connections that bind us together.

In Black households, glassware was more than just functional; it holds profound meaning. It’s a solid symbol of our ancestral heritage and a testament to the strength, love, and elegance that permeated our homes.
