Written by: Yasmine Duhé

Emerging rapper Z-Wells recently engaged in a candid conversation with OhSoYas Media, shedding light on his highly-anticipated second album, "Joseph". During the interview, Z-Wells delved deep into the project, offering personal insights into its creation and reflecting on his transformative musical journey.

Who’s Z-Wells?

Z-Wells, originally known as Zackery Wells, entered this world on November 22, 1997, hailing from Alexandria, Louisiana. At a tender age of 10, the budding artist discovered his passion for rap, finding inspiration in the likes of Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, and Erykah Badu. These influential figures played a pivotal role in shaping Z-Wells' artistic journey.

During an intimate conversation, Z-Wells opened up about the origins of his stage name. He revealed that "Z-Wells" wasn't his original moniker. The name was bestowed upon him by his older cousins, who shouted him out in a song, giving birth to the catchy alias. However, during his early years, Z-Wells decided to go by "Lil Zack" as a tribute to his muse, Lil Wayne, who served as a significant source of inspiration for his budding musical career.

Z-Wells brings a distinctive sound to the underground artist scene, captivating audiences with his distinct and original style. His verses capture the authentic essence of the raw, gritty Louisiana twang, creating a great experience for listeners. In his album "Joseph," the artist presents a collection of 11 tracks, paying homage to the soulful sounds of early 2000s R&B and hip-hop while infusing his own contemporary flair. The result is a harmonious blend that evokes a sense of nostalgia while embracing a modern twist.

The Louisiana native is leaving a lasting impression on the vibrant music scene in Houston, TX, as he shares his excitement about his regular live performances. Wells expresses his sheer joy in being able to take the stage where he states “It feels amazing to perform. Before the pandemic, I didn’t perform a lot, but after I’ve probably performed every week”

His captivating performances have made its mark at venues such as The House of Blues, the BLNKA Exhibit, Sofar Sounds Houston, and he has even taken part in the Jazzy Sundays music festival at the Emancipation Park Conservancy. Z-Wells continues to leave his mark through his electrifying live shows, solidifying his presence in the Houston music scene.
